We are going to reschedule the nature workshop. We will focus on activities and experiences you can do with children less than 3 years old, but all preschool and early elementary children will enjoy these ideas as well. We will post the date and time as soon as we have decided when the session will be held. We hope you will be able to join us.

We had a great time at the Making Music workshop on March 5. We talked about making musical instruments using recycled materials. Each participant received the items needed to make mallets, rainsticks, and finger cymbals. On the water goblets, we played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Mary had a Little Lamb!

Sharon Howell got us up and moving. We learned new songs and creative dances to use in our classrooms. One lucky attendee received an Ella Jenkins CD!

The March 9 Nature workshop has been cancelled. We hope to reschedule that at a later date.

ArtsnScraps will host two workshops in March.

Making Music will take place on March 5, from 10:00 am - noon. Register with Shannon at shannon@childrensharbor.cc or call her at 757 397 2981.

On March 9, in conjunction with Christy John and the Virginia Infant & Toddler Specialist Network, we will present Learning About Nature. This workshop is from 11:30 am - 12:30 PM and will be followed by an audioconference with the Infant & Toddler Network staff.

The workshop on January 22nd was lots of fun. We learned how to grow carrots, potatoes, onions, and sweet potatoes from the vegetables in our fridge! These are so easy to do and children love to be able to eat what they have grown (in addition to all the other things they put in their mouths).

We talked about growing pizza gardens in the shape of round actual pizzas. Plant oregonp, basil, green peppers, and tomatoes in different pizza-shaped sections of a circle in the ground and you have a pizza garden. You can start this indoors using the plastic top off a purchased veggie or fruit tray and then transfer it outside when the weather is warm enough.

We used grass seed to make "earth buddies" and "earth worms" - great home and classroom projects. Jody Ullmann from Mud Puddle Science shared some of her favorite books and other planting/composting activities.

Our next workshop is March 5 - Making Music. In the first hour, we will make a variety of musical instruments and discuss ways to use these instruments in a contolled classroom setting. In the second hour, Sharon Howell will get us up and moving! We will learn new songs and fingerplays to use in the classroom.

Be sure and bring your supply kits so you will be able to make all the projects. For this session, you will want to have adult scissors, a hot glue gun, and permanent markers.

We are thinking of offering a Popping Your Tops Off workshop in the near future. This one focuses on the hundreds of ways to use lids to teach math, science, language, social studies, music, creative movement, and art. If you'd be interested in attending, let us know and we will pick a date.

I can't even begin to tell you how long it took me to figure out how to get to the "dashboard" and begin posting....but now that I am here, I hope to be able to "blog" more frequently.
We are very excited about our upcoming workshop, Botany Bonanza (January 22 from 10 - 12 at Children's Harbor Ghent, 1900 Llewellyn Avenue in Norfolk). We have tons of ideas for you to use in your classrooms this Spring. I don't want to give any ideas away, but I will tell you that I have been preparing some "things" since December of last year!
